C&O Bicycle is located in beautiful, small-town Hancock, Maryland. You will find us at mile marker 124.5 of the C&O Canal, an old towpath used to transport freight from Georgetown to Cumberland. We are also at mile marker 10.7 on the Western Maryland Rail Trail, a 22.5-mile paved trail that provides a scenic route through the mountains, not over them.
Our unique shop offers bicycle rentals, repairs, and sales. We also have a screened-in bunkhouse for weary travelers to spend the night. Our general store is the perfect place to stop for a snack, a drink, or necessary supplies before hitting the trails.
What makes C&O Bicycle unique?
- We specialize in those specific items that you most need along the C&O Canal and Western Maryland Rail Trail (WMRT) like tires, helmets, saddles, panniers, racks, etc.
- If you want to experience the C&O Canal or WMRT on your own bike, you can have it shipped to us. For a nominal fee, we will gladly assemble it and go over it before your journey. We can also have it boxed and shipped back to your home.
- We are the unofficial C&O Canal/WMRT Visitors’ Center West! We are always happy to offer free advice, literature, and stories about how to experience our great area. We know the best restaurants, places to stay, and where to get an adult beverage after a long day! We love visitors!
About The Owners:
Jimmy and Tracy Barnhart purchased C&O Bicycle in November 2015. We have also owned Barnhart’s Lawn & Garden, LLC, an authorized Husqvarna outdoor power tools dealership in Hancock, MD, since October 2013. We moved our lawn and garden shop into the same building as the bike shop in March 2016, and both businesses are now operating under one roof at 9 S. Pennsylvania Ave. in Hancock.
We have been married since 2007 and live on a farm in Buck Valley, PA, with a small herd of Black Angus cows, two dogs (Hercules and Leroy) and three cats (Bugsy, Tater, and Maddie). Although Leroy is the official shop dog for Barnhart’s Lawn & Garden, he can also be found circulating through C&O Bicycle.
Jimmy was born and raised in Fulton County, PA and has lived in Warfordsburg, PA for over 50 years. He has three grown children (Alexandra, Christian, and Elijah). Jimmy has an Electronics Technician degree from Devry Institute of Technology in Columbus, OH. He previously worked in the asphalt industry for 30 years before starting his own business (Barnhart’s Lawn & Garden, LLC) in October 2013. Jimmy has also been a small engine mechanic for most of his life, working on chainsaws in his father’s (Tink Barnhart’s) general store in Warfordsburg. Jimmy currently serves on the board for the Hancock Chamber of Commerce and is also a Rotarian and a Mason. He’s a farmer at heart, though, and in his limited spare time he raises Black Angus cows in addition to growing hay and corn.
Tracy was born and raised in Johnstown, PA and has also lived in Gaithersburg, MD and Frederick, MD. She holds a B.S. degree in Geology from the University of Pittsburgh and has been employed full-time at AASHTO re:source (formerly AMRL) in Frederick, MD since 1990. Tracy is the Quality Manager at AASHTO re:source, and floats between C&O Bicycle and Barnhart’s Lawn & Garden on the weekends. Tracy is very active in her church (Hancock United Methodist Church), where she is the lead singer in the Praise Band, a member of the Administrative Board, and serves on committees such as the Community Relations Team. In her spare time, Tracy enjoys traveling, hiking, and baking.
